A bone density screening test can determine if you have low bone mass or osteoporosis, allowing your physician to measure the strength of your bones, evaluate your risk of fracture, and create a treatment plan if necessary. This test is safe and painless, and radiation exposure is minimal.
What to expect:
You will be asked to lie still on a table while imaging equipment passes over you and scans two or more areas, typically the hip and lower spine. The Technologist may raise your legs for part of the test.
What you need to know before your test:
- Wear loose clothing, preferably without zippers, underwires or other metal parts
- You will be asked to remove all jewelry, hair accessories, glasses and other metal objects
- The procedure typically takes about 15 minutes
A CT scan is a detailed type of X-ray that produces images of your internal organs. Your physician may recommend a CT scan for conditions or symptoms such as diverticulitis, appendicitis, kidney stones, stroke, cancer or tumors, lung or heart disease, or internal bleeding. It is also commonly used to evaluate small and/or complicated fractures not easily identified with traditional X-rays.
What to expect:
The CT technologist will ask you to lie down on a narrow table that is connected to the CT scanner. The part(s) of the body that are to be scanned will pass through the middle of a large, doughnut-shaped scanner ring. This ring holds the X-ray tube, and sends the CT images to the computer. You may be asked to hold your breath periodically during your exam. It is very important to be as still as possible and follow all instructions during your CT exam.
What you need to know before your test:
- Wear loose clothing, preferably without zippers, underwires or metal parts
- You will be asked to remove all jewelry, hair accessories, glasses and other metal objects
- Ask your doctor if you need to fast before the test
- Depending on the body part being scanned, you may need to drink oral contrast media or receive intravenous contrast media by injection
- Most exams can be completed in 15 to 20 minutes, or less
- Most patients can resume normal diet and activities immediately
X-ray imaging is a quick and easy way for a physician to view and assess common abnormalities, such as broken bones, pneumonia, gastrointestinal or genitourinary problems. Information obtained will assist your physician in determining your course of treatment.
What to expect:
- Before your test, the technologist will position you appropriately so that the correct body part is in the field of view between the X-ray tube and the detector or image intensifier. The Technologist will then leave the room or move behind a partition. You may be asked to hold your breath or remain still while the image is taken. The technologist will review the images before you’re released. In some cases, more images will need to be taken.
What you need to know before your test:
- You may be asked to remove articles of clothing or jewelry
- Contrast media may be administered orally or intravenously
- You will need to be as still as possible as images are taken
- Several images will be obtained, depending on the procedure performed
- Imaging sessions can range from about 15 minutes to two hours or more
Flower Mound Imaging offers the latest digital mammography equipment and techniques, in a separate women’s suite with private dressing rooms and capes to ensure your comfort and privacy. For this special X-ray test, we use state-of-the-art digital mammography with computer-aided detection to produce and analyze a detailed digital image of the breast. Images are displayed by computer in a matter of seconds and can be manipulated by the radiologist to better see abnormalities. A board-certified Radiologist, specifically trained in women’s imaging, will be on hand to evaluate your digital mammogram before a report is submitted to your physician.
What to expect:
You will be asked to undress from the waist up and will be given a cape to wear. The test is typically performed with you standing up and facing the Mammography machine. A Mammographer will position each breast inside the machine, which will provide pressure to flatten the breast tissue. For your comfort, our equipment features the Mammopad®, a soft, foam pad that creates a cushion between you and the mammography equipment. The technologist will then step behind the barrier and ask you to hold still while several images are taken. The procedure will then be repeated with the opposite breast. The technologist will review the images before you’re released. In some cases, more images will need to be taken. During your visit, you may also receive education about breast care and self-examination techniques.
What you need to know before your test:
- Do not wear lotions, deodorants, powders or creams on your chest before the procedure
- Wear a two-piece outfit so that you can remove your top only
- If you feel sore after the test, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever
An ultrasound, also called sonogram, is a safe, painless procedure that uses sound waves to provide a detailed look at the organs and soft tissues within the body. Typical procedures evaluate the abdomen, chest, obstetric/pelvic area, breast and thyroid. Ultrasound is also used in the determination of vascular abnormalities.. Information obtained will help your physician identify any problems and plan a course of treatment specific to your needs.
What to expect:
You will be asked to lie down on a table, and the area that is being scanned will be uncovered and a warm gel applied. The sonographer will then move a device called a transducer back and forth across the area of interest. A series of images will be made of the area in question.
What you need to know before your test:
- For abdominal ultrasound, you may be asked to refrain from eating or drinking for up to 8 hours before your procedure
- For Pelvic or OB Ultrasound, ou may be asked to drink 32 oz. of water one hour prior to your scheduled appointment time
- Bring comparison films or CDs with you to your appointment, if applicable
- Bring written orders from your physician if he/she has not already faxed a copy to us
- You will be asked to hold very still
- You may be asked to hold your breath periodically
- The test will take approximately 45 minutes to one hour
